AFRICAN QUEEN / LOVE AMONG THE RUINS

Double Feature.
African Queen:
Adapted from a novel by C.S. Forester, The African Queen stars Humphrey Bogart in his Oscar-winning portrayal of Charlie Alnut - the slovenly, gin-swilling captain of a tramp steamer called The African Queen, which ships supplies to small East African villages during World War I. Katherine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the straight-laced spinster of a prim British missionary, Brother Samual (Robert Morley).
When invading Germans kill the missionary and level the village, Aunt offers to take Rose back to civillisation. She can't tolerate his drinking or bad manners; he isn't crazy about her imperious, judgemental attitude. However, it does not take long before their passionate dislike turns to love. Together the disparate duo work to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and devise an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat.

Love Among The Ruins:
In the prim, proper world of upper class England, an aging beauty is accused of having seduced and abandoned a man young enough to be her grandson – and now he is suing her for £50,000 for breach of promise! She turns to the greatest barrister in the Empire to defend her, a man she seduced and abandoned some forty years earlier, who’s remained hopelessly in love with her ever since!.

It’s a witty and wonderfully poignant romantic comedy, starring two of the greatest performers of our time, Hepburn and Olivier, under the direction of Hollywood legend George Cukor (My Fair Lady, The Philadelphia Story).

APARTMENT, THE

APARTMENT, THE

Billy Wilder's THE APARTMENT blends his customary harsh cynicism with a humane streak that appears only fleetingly in his films. It stars Jack Lemmon as C.C. Baxter, an office clerk who curries favor with the executives in his office by giving them the key to his small apartment for the odd afternoon dalliance. Among them his is his callous boss, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray), who Baxter eventually learns is using his place to sleep with Miss Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the sweet elevator operator the clerk has loved from afar. When Sheldrake coldly dumps the vulnerable young woman, she tries to commit suicide, but is saved by the intervention of Baxter. As the clerk lovingly nurses the young woman back to health he begins to realize, with the help of epigrammatic neighbor Dr. Dreyfuss (Jack Kruschen), exactly how much of a fool he has been. Wilder brilliant depiction of the average American office as a place of brutality, coldness, and alienation conjure up Kafka and Marx. The director seduces the audience into what appears to be an unusually frank sex comedy, but turns the tables in displaying the consequences of the executive's cold indifference. Lemmon and MacLaine both give career performances and MacMurray is memorable as the blandly smiling snake.

Casablanca:
Arguably one of the greatest movies ever produced, Casablanca is a romantic masterpiece. Humphrey Bogart takes the leading role in this "love will conquer all" movie that regularly makes it into any top ten list of films. Featuring the often-misquoted line "play it again Sam" this MGM title is a true classic. The magic of the movie lies in Bogart's understanding performance, Bergman's depiction of a torn lover and a supporting cast that includes Claude Rains as the police Chief. However, cinema history will always have a special place for Dooley Wilson's rendition of 'As Time Goes By'.
