SPITFIRE OVER AUSTRALIA AND GHOST SQUADRON
The story of Colin Pay, a crop dusting pilot from Scone New South Wales and the restoration of a Spitfire fighter to flying condition...after two decades still the only one flying in Australia. During World War II, more than 650 Spitfires were delivered to the RAAF. This one, RAAF serial number A58-758 (RAF MV239 VH-HET) is a Vickers Supermarine Spitfire HG Mk VIII delivered in 1945. It never saw operational service and for many years was kept at Sydney Technical College where it was used as an instructional airframe. Later it was acquired by the late Sid Marshall. When Colin Pay acquired it in 1982 it had no engine. The film shows how he labouriously rebuilt the aircraft from a corroded hulk into a superbly restored flying machine. The film has some of the best air to air colour footage ever shot of a Spitfire in Australia.
