French auteur Jean-Jacques Beineix's (Betty Blue) inspirational documentary is the extraordinary true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby. Surviving twenty days in a coma he awoke speechless and almost completely paralysed with only the ability to blink his left eyelid. Diagnosed with a condition known as Locked-in syndrome Bauby took up the immense challenge by not only learning to communicate through the blinking of his eyelid but devised a way to record his memoir in print by partner assisted scanning. Published as The Diving Bell and the Butterfly his story is one of tremendous hope and was superbly dramatised in the Golden Globe winning and Oscar nominated feature film of the same name. Also included is the documentary feature OTAKU an expose on the obsessive attraction of hobbies and the many people who become fanatically involved in their pursuit of happiness. Finally Mr. Michel's Dog is the short fiction film that launched Beineix's career a delightful tale about a mischievous fiction that becomes reality.
