The Picnic At Hanging Rock DVD is the complete season of the new 2018 series.

The Picnic At Hanging Rock season 1 DVD stars Natalie Dormer and is a gripping reimagining of the iconic Australian novel that plunges us into the mysterious disappearances of three schoolgirls and their governess on Valentine’s Day, 1900. Exploring the event’s far-reaching impact on the students and staff of Appleyard College and its enigmatic headmistress, theories soon abound, paranoia sets in, and long-held secrets surface, as the Rock exerts its strange power and the dark stain of the unsolved mystery continues to spread.

The disappearance of three schoolgirls and a teacher during an excursion to Victoria’s Hanging Rock on Valentine’s Day 1900 was explored in the book, before being adapted for the big screen in 1975. However, in this new 2018 series, the characters’ backstories are delved into in much more depth. As viewers will soon learn, it turns out there are some serious skeletons hiding in their closets.

'In her novel, Joan Lindsay gives you hints there is a past life and that Hester isn’t being completely honest about her background,” Dormer says .

“The delicious thing that has been done with our version of Picnic at Hanging Rock is that we have really fleshed out her morally ambiguous background. The audience slowly learns more and more, and that she is not as she portrays herself to be.”

The popular star, who is known for her diverse acting roles, was initially attracted to the part due to the script. But on deeper reflection there were many reasons she had to be involved in this project.

“Overarching this entire thing is: what happened to those girls?” she says, adding: “It’s such a great ensemble piece with so many characters with a lot of secrecy between them. And I thought it was just wonderful the way this community and school had been fleshed out.”

For Australian actress Yael Stone, who appears as Dora Lumley, mistress of Deportment and Bible Studies, working alongside Dormer was a dream.

"She’s a special actor and I admire her work,” Stone beams.

“I think she’s going to bring a lot to the role. She’s coming in as an outsider and will really be making a fantastic mark on our cultural memory.”

Having grown up with the tale, Stone was already familiar with the material going into filming – though she enjoyed a refresher prior to beginning.

“I was told not to rewatch the film. And I didn’t for a while but then secretly I gave in!” she says with a laugh.

“It’s quite different because we’re dealing with a six-hour miniseries and obviously the film is two hours, so we’re able to go into much more detail with characters and where they’ve come from and where they’re going to.”

She adds: “We worked with Larysa Kondracki, who was the set-up director, and I had a wonderful time with her. It’s her really original mind that allows this revisiting of the classic to sing. I’m excited to see how it comes off, because she was doing incredible things.”
