The Mosaic season 1 DVD is a great new HBO Whodunnit starring Sharon Stone, Devin Ratray, Garrett Hedlund and Frederick Weller.

Its a red-letter day when a Hollywood director ventures into the world of the small screen and, since its announcement, Steven Soderbergh’s murder mystery Mosaic has cemented itself as one of the best new series of 2018.

Right from the get-go we’re plunged into the case. The show’s initial scene has Joel (Garrett Hedlund) being advised by a police officer that it’s looking very likely he will be arrested for the murder of Olivia Lake (Sharon Stone).

There’s some convincing evidence – such as deleted Facebook posts, an incriminating T-shirt and Joel’s own bloody hand – so things don’t seem great for the guy.

The series then flashes back four years, to show the lead-up to this horrific event. When the two meet, Joel is doing bar duties at a function in Olivia’s honour – there’s a spark, hinting at an upcoming dalliance.

How did we get from there to here?

Make no mistake, Stone is the star of Mosaic, and she puts in her best performance in recent memory. Her Olivia Lake is fragile, flirty, cruel and funny – and that’s just the first episode! Stone says that’s what she loves about the character. “Well, isn’t that how women are? I don’t think that for so long we’ve been able to see women as women are. It’s as though women are supposed to compartmentalise themselves, and we’re not supposed to understand that women are complex people. I think we grasp at this point that’s a bit passé.”

The Oscar-winning director has a wide CV, from the Oceans films to Magic Mike and this year’s Logan Lucky. It seems like there’s nothing he can’t tackle, and he proves it here with this chilling (literally, it’s set in a snowy resort town) murder mystery. “I watch a lot of true crime on TV. When [Mosaic writer] Ed Solomon and I started talking about this, we agreed that something with a murder in the middle of it felt like the obvious, best choice. So we culled from a couple of different real-life events. We made a list of ideas that we felt we could explore.” He brings an almost claustrophobic sense to this series – intimate discussions, intense plotting and scheming, and a truly icy atmosphere.

There’s something nasty going on underneath the surface in Summit – literally. Olivia’s sprawling property is apparently the site of some precious minerals and the shifty Michael O’Connor (James Ransone) wants to get his hands on it, but Olivia won’t sell. However, Michael and his cohort Tom (Michael Cerveris) aren’t going to give up. They enlist con man Eric Neill (Frederick Weller) to charm Olivia and get her to sell through whatever means possible. However, as to how (or even if) this connects to her eventual death remains to be seen.
