The kind widow Hobbs was very sad on her birthday, as she celebrates with her only companion, Percival, the pig.  All she ever wanted was a child, she explains to a beggar who comes to her house for food.  The beggar promptly turns into a Marvelous Magician and gives her a tiny seed which blooms into a tiny girl - Thumbelina.
