Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is about to have a bad day. He is a mentally unstable man toiling away in a lonely cubicle where hes constantly disrespected by his superiors and ignored by his co-workers. Dreaming of murdering his co-workers, he is beaten to the punch by a fellow office nut who does exactly what Bob is planning. When Bob shoots his colleague, he is branded a hero. Soon promoted by his boss (William H. Macy) to suspicious vocational heights, Bob is left to deal with Vanessa (Elisha Cuthbert), his object of workplace desire now paralysed and suicidal as a result of the shooting. On this particular bad day Bob crosses the line from potential killer to inadvertent hero and in the process saves Vanessas life. This invisible nobody saves the object of his desire only to have her ask him to end her life.
