The Practical Magic 2 DVD. A multi generational family of witches, cursed to be loveless for centuries, attempts to break the spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other.
Nearly three decades after the original film enchanted audiences and grew into a beloved seasonal cult classic, the Owens family returns in the long-awaited legacy sequel Practical Magic 2. Directed by Susanne Bier and based on Alice Hoffman’s follow-up novel, The Book of Magic, the film reunites the iconic core cast to explore the enduring power of sisterhood, love, and ancestral magic. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens, bringing their irreplaceable on-screen chemistry and the distinct, comforting energy of the 1998 original back to life.
The narrative reveals that the devastating generational curse—which dooms any man an Owens woman loves to an early grave—has unfortunately not been broken. Following the death of her second husband, Gary Hallet, a deeply traumatized Sally chooses to reject witchcraft entirely. In an desperate attempt to shield her now-grown daughters, Kylie and Antonia, from their tragic heritage, Sally uses magic to erase their memories of their powers and family history.
This decision backfires when Kylie, played by Joey King, falls deeply in love with her first true partner, Gideon, played by Xolo Maridueña. When Gideon is suddenly struck down by a car and slips into a cursed coma, the truth about the family lineage is exposed. Driven by a determination to save her love and shatter the curse once and for all, Kylie flees to England to track down the legendary Book of Ravens. This dangerous quest forces Sally and Gillian, alongside the wonderfully eccentric Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny, reprised by Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, to follow her across the Atlantic.
In England, the family encounters new faces, including Ian Wright, a professor of magical history played by Lee Pace, and a dark warlock named Tom Lockland, played by Solly McLeod, who schemes to steal the family’s magic. Ultimately, three generations of Owens women must unite, combining their strengths and embracing their true identities to face down dark forces and confront the ultimate sacrifice required to dismantle Maria Owens’ three-hundred-year-old curse.
While the film received mixed reactions from critics—some of whom found the plot to be overstuffed and a bit of a departure from the grounded, small-town charm of the first installment—it remains an undeniable feast of nostalgia for long-time fans. The return of midnight margaritas, the beautifully reconstructed Owens estate, and the addition of new talents like Maisie Williams as Antonia offer plenty of warmth. Beyond the convoluted plot points and visual effects, the true heart of the sequel rests exactly where it did twenty-eight years ago: in the unwavering, spellbinding bond of womanhood and the enduring love between sisters. The movie highlights that true magic is not just found in spells or ancient books, but in the fierce protection of family.
